Walking in Zagori
"Nowhere offers more rewards for walkers."
Travelux is once again inviting you to join our much-acclaimed
one-week walking tours. They where pioneered for those who
enjoy walking, admiring breathtaking scenery and nature and
not “heads down” trekking. Zagori is truly a magnificent
place, unique and diverse. There are over 1750 varieties of
plants including more than 50 varieties of orchids alone in
the Zagori region, many of them rare and some only native
to this area. Botanists revisit every year desperately seeking
out new or unrecorded species. Unusual birds, tortoises and
other wildlife flourish in this protected environment. Rivers
flow unpolluted, alive with speckled trout. Rumbling waterfalls
thunder through hidden ravines. If you walk regularly, are of
good health and reasonable fitness, you will be more than able
to participate in our leisurely guided programme. The group
will be based in The Red House in Ano Pedina on a full board
basis. The food in this area is simple, local and fresh. It is a
rich wine region and there are plenty of mountain springs so
you will not go thirsty. Over the week, there are six days of
walking, each one approximately three to four hours. Carrying
your own day sack, the terrain is mixed with some hill walking
at altitudes between 500 and 1000 metres above sea level.
Our guide will explain the history of the area and point out
animal tracks as you wander along riverbeds, through forest
tracks and up cobbled stairways that were once the only
source of communication between the hillside inhabitants.
You will also visit small monasteries; churches centuries years
old, plus other surprises that hide within the culture of these
traditionally built stone villages. On reading our description
of Zagori in this brochure, you will be forgiven in thinking
we have incorporated a degree of “poetic licence” in order to
sell the region. However, Zagori really is one of Europe’s
priceless gems, with diverse scenery hard to better any-where
else. Having walked and photographed it many times, we
can assure you of complete accuracy.
Linda has accompanied our guides on many occasions. These
walks are planned so you can expect lots of time to admire
the flora and fauna. Walking specifically to enjoy the natural
beauty of this area, its architecture and traditions, has a special
appeal of its own. An inspiring experience for all is ensured.
